Location: Amnéville, Moselle, East of France

This semi-rural district of 53,00 inhabitants and 12 towns operates 4 recycling centres. These have witnessed the emergence of a new practices and a changing legal context. The district Council was also committed to substantially increase recycling and reuse within the area.

As part of a broader larger rejuvenation plan, local authorities initiated the relocation, redesign and enhancement of the largest of these recycling centres (132,000 visits, 4,200 t collected annually).

This entailed a deep understanding of emerging needs and practices, e.g. reuse, as to offer a service most suited to the population and durable in time. Inecko studied current and coming trends, then co-designed the new facility suggesting new services.

Specifically, we have:

  • Assessed current and emerging users’ practices and needs via several data collection tools; brought further perspective with recycling and reuse sociology

  • Evidenced a growing local trend for reusing, delving further into 7 practices and 6 items, quantified and qualified demand for 8 possible additional services

  • Co-designed the facility suggesting additions resulting from needs analysis: second hand shop, building tools hire, repairing shop

  • Collected quantitative and qualitative primary data via 205-respondents survey, 53 on-site interviews in 4 recycling centres, and 2 focus groups of 4 participants each
